Africa Was Never Small — The Map Was

The world did not suddenly make Africa bigger.

It simply agreed to stop making it look smaller.

The United Nations General Assembly has endorsed a move toward the Equal Earth map projection, a world map designed to show landmasses in more accurate proportion than the old Mercator projection many of us grew up seeing.1

That matters because maps are not just schoolroom tools. They shape imagination. They tell us what looks central, what looks powerful, what looks distant, and what looks small.

For generations, one of the most familiar maps of the world has quietly distorted that picture.

The problem with the old map

The Mercator projection dates back to the 16th century. It was created for navigation, especially for sailors, because it helped preserve direction across the globe.1

But there was a cost.

The farther a place is from the equator, the more exaggerated it appears. That means areas like Greenland, Europe, and North America look much larger than they really are, while places closer to the equator — including Africa — appear smaller than their true scale.

One of the clearest examples is Greenland and Africa. On many Mercator maps, they can look almost comparable. In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland.1

So the issue is not that Africa needs to be enlarged.

Africa has always been vast.

The issue is that the world has spent centuries looking at a version of the globe that visually reduced it.

A map is never just a map

The campaign to “correct the map” has been led by African countries, the African Union, and advocacy groups including Africa No Filter and Correct The Map.12

Their argument is simple but powerful: distorted maps do more than misrepresent geography. They influence perception.

Correct The Map describes the Mercator projection as a distortion not only of size, but of “power and perception.” The campaign calls for the adoption of the Equal Earth projection in schools, textbooks, newsrooms, businesses, and digital platforms.2

That is why this story feels bigger than cartography.

A map is an image. And images teach.

They teach children where they are in the world. They teach societies what appears large or small. They teach audiences what looks central and what looks marginal.

When Africa is repeatedly shown smaller than it is, the distortion becomes more than visual. It becomes cultural.

Why this matters for African identity

For Colourfro, this story lands in a familiar place: representation.

We often talk about representation through clothing, art, hair, language, music, and design. But maps are part of representation too.

They are one of the first images many people ever see of the world. Before we learn global history, economics, migration, culture, or politics, we see a shape on a wall. We see continents arranged in a certain way. We absorb scale before we have the words to question it.

So when Africa is drawn smaller than its true size, that image can quietly shape how people understand the continent’s place in the world.

Africa is not a footnote.

It is the second-largest continent on Earth. It contains extraordinary geographic, cultural, linguistic, artistic, and historical depth. It is not one story, one style, one climate, one people, or one idea.

A more accurate map does not solve global inequality. It does not rewrite history by itself. But it does correct one of the images that helped make distortion feel normal.

And that matters.

Correcting the frame

The UN resolution does not ban the Mercator map. It does not force every classroom, newsroom, or platform to change overnight. It encourages a shift toward maps that show the world in truer proportion.1

Still, symbols matter.

A map on a classroom wall matters.

A map in a textbook matters.

A map on a website, in a newsroom graphic, or inside a digital product matters.

Because every visual frame carries a message.

For too long, one of the world’s most common frames made Africa look smaller than it is. The Equal Earth projection offers a different visual starting point — one where the continent’s scale is harder to ignore.

That is not just a technical correction.

It is a cultural one.

Africa was never small

This moment is a reminder that some distortions become invisible because we inherit them early.

We get used to the image.

We stop asking who made it, what it was made for, and what it leaves out.

But once you see the difference, it is difficult to unsee.

Africa did not become larger because of a vote. Its land, people, cultures, histories, futures, and influence were already there.

What changed is the willingness to correct the picture.

Africa was never small.

The map was.
